Wombaroo Food Products (Wombaroo) is a South Australian food manufacturing company that specialises in research and producing milk replacers and specialist foods for birds and animals (in particular marsupials).[1]

History

Wombaroo researches the nutritional requirements of captive and wild birds and animals and has developed several products specifically for zoos and captive breeding programs. They sell products to wildlife carers, aviculturists and animal breeders, and supply specially formulated milk products for animal studies to the Department of Paediatrics at Flinders University, University of Sydney, Westmead Hospital, Children’s Hospital Research Institute, and the Women’s and Children’s Hospital Adelaide. They have also supplied individual researchers at the University of Tasmania, University of New England, Australian National University, Adelaide University, Flinders University and Charles Sturt University with animal and bird foods for their particular studies.

Roslyn and Brian Rich are the founders of Wombaroo Food Products which operates from Adelaide, South Australia. Roslyn is a hospital scientist specialising in microbiology and haematology and has worked as Senior-In-Charge in hospital pathology laboratories. Brian is an industrial biochemist and worked in the pharmaceutical industry as a production and product development manager.

Wombaroo Food Products started in 1984 producing specific milk replacers for different animals as well as specialised diets for birds and later introduced the Passwell range of bird foods. Wombaroo have supplied milk replacers to the World Society for the Protection of Animals for orphaned Orang-utans in Borneo, Taman Safari for Sumartran Tigers and to the Northern Hairy-nose Wombat recovery program. Their bird foods are used extensively as maintenance diets at institutions such as Taronga Zoo, Adelaide Zoo, Currumbin Bird Park, Gorge Wildlife Park, Territory Wildlife Park, Healesville Sanctuary, Department of Conservation and local councils.

Wombaroo Food Products and Passwell foods can be sourced throughout Australia from vets, pet stores and wildlife groups. The products are also available in New Zealand and the United States.
